We Give Prospective Nursing Students A Dose of Reality

Entering nursing school is widely recognized as a extraordinarily demanding undertaking. Achieving a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) or an Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN/ADN) and becoming licensed nurse takes not only intellectual ability, but also a significant degree of emotional resilience, time management skills, technological aptitude, cultural competence, dedication, and a desire to provide the highest quality patient care. Many prospective nursing students approach the decision to pursue nursing education with a limited understanding of these challenges, often relying on advice from university recruiters, friends, or family members who may lack direct experience or comprehensive knowledge of the profession’s demands.

A faulty perception of the difficulty of nursing education can result in unanticipated academic difficulties, increased stress, and in some cases program dismissal with significant financial consequences. University recruiters may offer up conflicting information to meet enrollment numbers, universities may expect a certain class failure rate to maintain academic rigor, and even friends and family within the field may offer a skewed view of the profession. We pair prospective nursing students with actual student-nurses in accredited U.S. nursing programs for candid, one-on-one interviews on what nursing school is actually like and how hard it is.

The Bottom Line: Attending Nursing School is a life changing decision. The experiences of a currently enrolled, student-nurse can be invaluable to your decision to enter a program and pursue a nursing career.
